Daryl Mitchell has once again proven to be the thorn in India’s side, producing a magnificent unbeaten century to guide New Zealand to a historic victory in the second One Day International (ODI). Chasing a challenging target of 285 in Rajkot, Mitchell’s commanding 131 off 117 deliveries allowed the Black Caps to cross the finish line with seven wickets and 15 balls to spare.
This victory marks New Zealand’s highest-ever successful run chase in ODIs on Indian soil, eclipsing their previous records in a display of tactical brilliance and composure. Beyond the statistical milestone, the win is of immense psychological importance for the visitors; it levels the three-match series at 1-1 and snaps a disheartening eight-match losing streak against India in this format.
New Zealand’s pursuit began precariously, as they found themselves stuttering at 46-2. However, Daryl Mitchell was joined by the dependable Will Young, and the pair proceeded to systematically dismantle the Indian bowling attack. Their third-wicket partnership yielded a match-defining 162 runs. While Young fell shortly before the end for a well-made 87, Mitchell remained immovable, striking his eighth career ODI century.
| Player | Runs | Balls | 4s / 6s | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daryl Mitchell | 131* | 117 | 12 / 4 | 111.96 |
| Will Young | 87 | 94 | 8 / 1 | 92.55 |
| KL Rahul | 112 | 92 | 10 / 3 | 121.73 |
| Shubman Gill | 54 | 61 | 6 / 0 | 88.52 |
Mitchell’s heroics overshadowed a superb century from India’s KL Rahul. Batting with aggressive intent, Rahul struck 112 off just 92 balls to propel India to a total of 284. Like Mitchell, this was Rahul’s eighth century in the format. While Captain Shubman Gill contributed a steady half-century, the much-anticipated fireworks from India's senior duo failed to materialise.
Rohit Sharma (24) and Virat Kohli (23) both looked set before being dismissed by the impressive Christian Clarke. The Kiwi seamer was the pick of the bowlers, claiming the prized scalps of the "Big Two" as well as Shreyas Iyer, effectively stifling India's momentum during the middle overs.
With the series now perfectly poised at one win apiece, all eyes turn to the third and final ODI. The teams will travel to Indore for the decider on 18 January, where New Zealand will look to carry the momentum of this record-breaking chase to secure a rare series win in the subcontinent.
