German reinsurance giant Munich Re has agreed to acquire the United States-based cyber insurance provider At-Bay at an enterprise value of $575 million. The Berlin-announced transaction is expected to close officially during the first quarter of next year, subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
The acquisition marks a major strategic expansion for Munich Re into the rapidly growing specialty cyber risk and insurtech market. Founded in San Francisco, At-Bay specializes in delivering cyber insurance coverage alongside active risk management tools tailored primarily for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Unlike traditional insurance carriers, the company integrates technology-driven risk assessments into its underwriting model, continuously monitoring its policyholders’ digital infrastructure to identify vulnerabilities before potential breaches occur.
Corporate vulnerability to ransomware attacks, data breaches, and supply chain disruptions has surged globally over recent years, driving unprecedented demand for specialized cyber coverage. Commercial policyholders across North America increasingly seek comprehensive protection that combines financial indemnification with proactive threat detection. By bringing At-Bay fully under its corporate umbrella, Munich Re significantly strengthens its direct distribution capabilities and technological footprint in the world’s largest market for cyber insurance.
The move builds upon an established commercial relationship between the two entities, as Munich Re’s underwriting units previously provided capacity and risk-sharing support for At-Bay’s policies. Full ownership allows the German group to capture higher margin underwriting profits while leveraging At-Bay’s proprietary risk analysis and automated underwriting platforms.
Industry analysts view the $575 million deal as evidence of ongoing consolidation within the insurtech landscape, where established global reinsurers are acquiring specialized digital platforms to modernize risk assessment and expand their market share. The transaction is projected to finalize by the end of March next year, positioning Munich Re to capitalise on the rising global demand for cyber risk protection across commercial sectors.
