The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has created a “catastrophic” situation for millions of children across the Middle East, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned. Since the outbreak of violence on 28 February, more than 1,100 children have either been killed or injured, highlighting the devastating human cost of the conflict.

In a statement released on Wednesday, UNICEF outlined the immediate impact on children in the region. According to the organisation’s latest figures, fatalities among children so far include 200 in Iran, 91 in Lebanon, four in Israel, and one in Kuwait.

UNICEF cautioned that as the violence escalates and spreads, the number of children affected is likely to rise further. The organisation highlighted that the conflict has disrupted education for millions of children, forcing countless families to abandon their homes and endure harsh, unsafe conditions under continuous bombardment.

“Children are being killed, maimed, and denied access to essential services,” the statement read. “There is no justification for the deliberate targeting of children or the destruction of vital infrastructure that sustains their survival and development.”

The agency emphasised the long-term consequences for the region’s future, noting that the lives of nearly 200 million children in the Middle East are now under threat. UNICEF has urged the international community to take immediate, effective measures to protect children from further harm and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in urgent need.

Experts warn that the humanitarian crisis could deepen if diplomatic and protective measures are not swiftly implemented. Beyond the immediate physical dangers, children are at risk of severe psychological trauma, malnutrition, and long-term educational disruption. Humanitarian groups stress the importance of safeguarding basic services such as healthcare, water, and shelter to prevent a broader catastrophe.

UNICEF’s appeal serves as a stark reminder of the indiscriminate toll of armed conflict on the most vulnerable. The agency has called on governments and international organisations to urgently intervene and uphold the rights of children, emphasising that failure to act could condemn a generation to lasting suffering.
