The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a temporary ban on public gatherings, demonstrations, and processions in several areas of the capital to ensure security during the opening of the first session of the Jatiya Sangsad’s 13th parliamentary term. The restriction will take effect from midnight on Wednesday and remain in force until the conclusion of the parliamentary session.

In an official public notice issued on Wednesday, the DMP stated that the first sitting of the newly elected parliament will commence on Thursday, 12 March, at the National Parliament complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Authorities have emphasised the need to maintain public order and ensure an uninterrupted parliamentary process during the opening days of the session.

Under the directive, the carrying of firearms, explosives, or any other hazardous materials has been strictly prohibited within the designated security perimeter. Additionally, all forms of assemblies, rallies, demonstrations, protest marches, and processions are banned in the specified areas surrounding the parliament complex.

Officials explained that such measures are routinely implemented during important parliamentary events to prevent security threats and minimise public disruption. The National Parliament building and its adjoining zones are regarded as high-security areas during parliamentary sessions, particularly during the opening sitting when senior government officials, lawmakers, and foreign diplomats may be present.

The parliament complex, located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, is one of the most strategically sensitive locations in the capital. The building itself, designed by renowned American architect Louis Kahn, is considered an architectural landmark and houses the legislative chamber where Bangladesh’s elected representatives conduct national policymaking and debates.

Areas Under the Restriction

According to the police notice, the prohibition applies to a wide area surrounding the parliament complex, including major roads and intersections frequently used by commuters.

Police authorities have urged the public to comply fully with the restrictions and cooperate with law enforcement personnel to maintain order. Security forces are expected to increase patrols and checkpoints around the restricted zones throughout the duration of the parliamentary session.

The first session of the 13th parliament is expected to focus on administrative formalities, including the swearing-in of members, the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and the outlining of the government’s legislative agenda for the upcoming term. Ensuring a calm and secure environment around the parliament complex is therefore seen as a priority for the authorities.
