Former England Cricket Icon Robin Smith Passes Away at 62

Published: 02 Dec 2025, 07:00 pm

Robin Smith, one of England’s most courageous and technically gifted batters of the late 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 62 at his home in Perth, Australia. His family confirmed the news, stating that the cause of death will be determined through a postmortem investigation and requested privacy during this difficult period.

Smith played 62 Test matches for England between 1988 and 1996, scoring 4,236 runs at an impressive average of 43.67. Known for his fearless approach against the world’s fastest bowlers, Smith carved out a reputation as one of the game’s toughest competitors. His front-foot square cut became one of the most feared shots of his era, allowing him to counter the hostility of West Indies’ legendary pace attack.

Some of his finest performances came during England’s Caribbean tour of 1990, where his grit and consistency were central to England’s rare Test victory in Jamaica. He also delivered in home series against the West Indies in 1991 and 1995, reinforcing his status as a dependable presence against elite fast bowling.

In limited-overs cricket, Smith produced one of England’s greatest individual ODI innings. At Edgbaston in 1993, he remained unbeaten on 167 from 163 balls against Australia—a record that stood untouched for 23 years until Alex Hales surpassed it in 2016.

Despite his remarkable strengths, Smith occasionally struggled against spin bowling. The rise of Shane Warne during the 1993 Ashes proved particularly significant. Warne’s early dominance influenced selectors to drop Smith ahead of the subsequent tour of Australia, a decision that many fans and experts continue to debate. Ironically, Smith and Warne later developed a close friendship, and Smith played a role in encouraging Warne to join Hampshire.

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1963, Smith grew up with cricket at the centre of his life. His father built a customised practice net in their backyard, where Smith trained alongside greats like Barry Richards and Mike Procter. Encouraged by Richards, Hampshire recruited Smith and his older brother Chris, both of whom eventually played for England after emigrating.

Smith made his Test debut at Headingley in 1988 against the West Indies. His first innings featured a century partnership with Allan Lamb, another South African-born English star. However, England still lost the match after a devastating bowling display by Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall, and Courtney Walsh.

His final Test appearance came in 1996 against South Africa in Cape Town. Although only 32 at the time, Smith was sidelined as selectors pursued a new generation of players, despite his outstanding batting average—one bettered only by David Gower and Graham Thorpe among his contemporaries.

After retiring in 2004, Smith faced well-documented battles with alcoholism and mental health concerns, topics he addressed openly in his emotional 2019 autobiography The Judge: More Than Just A Game. In recent years, he had spoken publicly about his recovery and had even attended the opening Ashes Test in Perth just last week.

ECB Chair Richard Thompson paid tribute, describing Smith as a player who “stood toe to toe with the fastest bowlers in the world with defiance, courage, and unmatched entertainment.” He added that Smith will forever be remembered as one of Hampshire’s greats and a cherished figure in English cricket.
