Former England captain Joe Root’s tour of Australia ended with mixed feelings. While he played an excellent innings of 138 runs in the first innings of the Brisbane Test, he also set an embarrassing world record.
In every Australia tour, Root has struggled for victories. Following the defeat in Perth, England lost again in Brisbane, leaving Root winless in 16 Test matches in Australia. This makes him the player with the most Tests played in an opponent’s country without a victory.
Before this, India’s legendary Kapil Dev held a notable record. Kapil played 15 Tests in Pakistan without a win, but Root’s statistics are considerably worse. In 16 matches in Australia, England drew only 2 and lost 14.
Additionally, Root is also approaching the record for most Tests lost in a single country. James Anderson and Alastair Cook have lost 15 matches in Australia. One more defeat for Root will make him share this record with them.
Although Root’s individual performance was strong, England’s results were disappointing. Cricket analysts believe Root’s experience in Australia will serve as a lesson for future tours.
