In a shocking incident in Dhaka’s Rayerbazar area, a schoolgirl named Shahriar Sharmin Binti was brutally stabbed to death outside her residence. Police from Hazaribagh Thana believe the killing was motivated by a romantic dispute. Efforts are ongoing to locate the young man allegedly involved in the attack. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday in a narrow lane of the neighbourhood.
Binti, an eighth-grade student at Rayerbazar High School, lived with her family in a rented apartment in Hazaribagh. Her parents, businessman Bellal Hossain and his wife Nadia, were overcome with grief at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where they had rushed after the attack. Speaking to reporters, Bellal recounted that Binti had gone outside with her younger brother, Nabil, shortly before the attack. “A little later, I heard a commotion and rushed downstairs to see my daughter lying injured. We immediately took her to Shikdar Medical before transferring her to Dhaka Medical College,” he said.
The family resides on the fifth floor of a five-storey building in the lane near Hyder Hotel, Rayerbazar. Binti was the elder of two children, and their ancestral home is in Kachikata, Sakhipur Upazila, Shariatpur.
Nadia described the final moments: “Binti and Nabil had gone downstairs to buy vegetables. Nabil returned to the mosque after handing over the vegetables to his sister. Shortly after, I heard shouting and rushed down to find a crowd surrounding my daughter.” She alleged that a young man named Siam stabbed Binti and fled the scene. According to Nadia, Siam had been harassing Binti over mobile phone for the past three to four years. “I had scolded him on the phone previously. Now he has killed my daughter. We demand justice for her,” she said.
Police confirmed the severity of Binti’s injuries. Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said, “Binti sustained multiple stab wounds to her shoulders and back. Her body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination.”
Hazaribagh Thana Officer-in-Charge, Hafizur Rahman, stated, “Preliminary investigations indicate this was a love-related dispute. The suspect is currently being pursued for arrest.”
