Dhaka: Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has tendered his resignation, citing family reasons. On Wednesday, 25 February, at 12:30 pm, he signed his formal resignation letter and submitted it to the police headquarters.
Sheikh Sajjat Ali had been appointed as DMP Commissioner on 21 November 2024 by the caretaker government, amid a period of political unrest and student-led demonstrations. His appointment was part of a strategic effort to reorganise the police force and ensure stability in the capital following widespread public protests.
Although the normal tenure for a DMP Commissioner is fixed, Sheikh Sajjat Ali had been retained on a contractual basis for an additional two years after completing his regular term, reflecting the government’s confidence in his leadership during a sensitive period. Prior to his role as Commissioner, he served as Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP), bringing decades of experience to the capital’s law enforcement.
A veteran of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Police cadre, Sheikh Sajjat Ali belongs to the 1984 batch. Over his long career, he has been recognised for his efforts in organisational reform, operational planning, and handling critical law and order situations in Dhaka and other regions.
His resignation marks the end of a pivotal chapter in Dhaka’s policing landscape, raising questions about succession and future leadership strategies. While official announcements regarding his successor are awaited, observers note that the role of DMP Commissioner remains crucial for maintaining law and public security in Bangladesh’s largest city.
| Position | Duration | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Additional IGP | Before Nov 2024 | Oversaw key operational units |
| DMP Commissioner | 21 Nov 2024 – 25 Feb 2026 | Initially appointed amid student unrest; later retained on contract for 2 years |
| BCS Police Cadre | 1984 batch | Long-standing service with multiple leadership roles |
Officials at the police headquarters have expressed appreciation for Sheikh Sajjat Ali’s contributions, highlighting his dedication and strategic management during challenging times. Family considerations, however, have now prompted him to step down from public office.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is expected to announce a new DMP Commissioner shortly, as maintaining continuity and stability in Dhaka’s law enforcement remains a priority.
