In an ambitious move for associate cricket, Cricket Namibia has appointed renowned former international player and coach Gary Kirsten as a consultant for the men’s national team ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Kirsten, a former South African star with 7,289 Test runs and 6,798 ODI runs, brings decades of experience both on and off the field.
Kirsten’s coaching résumé is equally impressive. He famously led India to World Cup glory in 2011 and has worked with South Africa, Pakistan, and IPL franchises. Notably, he contributed to Gujarat Titans’ triumph in their inaugural IPL season in 2022. This wealth of experience is expected to greatly benefit Namibia as they aim to compete with the world’s elite teams.
“It is indeed a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia,” Kirsten said. “The dedication I have witnessed here towards creating a high-performance cricket culture is remarkable. Their new state-of-the-art stadium is a clear symbol of their ambition. I am excited to contribute to the national team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup next February.”
Kirsten will work alongside head coach Craig Williams, offering technical guidance, strategy advice, and insights to enhance the team’s performance. Analysts believe that Kirsten’s involvement could be pivotal, providing Namibia with a competitive edge against more established cricket nations.
Namibia’s recent performances have shown promise, with the national team steadily climbing the ranks of international cricket. The addition of a globally recognised figure like Kirsten reinforces the country’s commitment to excellence and positions Namibia as one of the most intriguing teams to watch in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Kirsten’s consultancy is also expected to have long-term benefits, inspiring young cricketers, improving training standards, and elevating the overall professionalism of Namibian cricket. With the tournament approaching, Namibia’s cricketing community is hopeful that this partnership will lead to historic achievements on the global stage.
