A secondary school teacher in Narsingdi district has been violently assaulted after allegedly refusing to take on private tuition duties, prompting arrests, student unrest and police intervention.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning in front of the Chaughoria Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Adarsha Vidyapith in Shibpur upazila. The victim, 32-year-old English teacher Monzil Molla, is an assistant teacher at the institution and originally hails from the Hatirdia area of Monohardi upazila.
According to police and school sources, the confrontation escalated when three teenagers and young men approached the teacher around 10:30am and requested that he provide private tutoring to one of them. When he declined due to lack of time and prior commitments, the situation quickly turned hostile. The group allegedly became aggressive and began physically assaulting him with punches and blows at the school gate. The teacher reportedly lost consciousness on the spot.
School staff later rescued him and administered first aid inside the premises.

Student protests and tension
News of the assault sparked immediate outrage among students of the institution. In a show of protest, they reportedly detained one of the alleged attackers from his residence and brought him to the school grounds before police arrived.
Tensions escalated further when students allegedly vandalised a police vehicle during the commotion. Additional law enforcement units, alongside local administrative officials and community leaders, were later deployed to the scene to restore order.
Administrative response
School headteacher Nazrul Islam Mridha said calm was restored following assurances from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) that a fair investigation and appropriate legal action would be ensured.
UNO Farzana Yasmin confirmed that the assault stemmed from a dispute over private tutoring arrangements and added that strict legal measures were being taken against those involved.
Shibpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kohinoor Mia stated that a case has been filed naming two accused, with ongoing operations to detain other suspects linked to the incident.
The attack has raised renewed concerns over the growing pressure on teachers regarding private tuition demands and the potential consequences when such expectations turn confrontational.
