A wave of unease has gripped the frontier region of Jhenaidah after police recovered a second unidentified body within three days from the Ichamati River, near the border upazila of Maheshpur. The consecutive discoveries have raised serious concerns among local residents and authorities, fuelling speculation over the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to police, the latest body was recovered on Thursday (16 April) at around 6:00 pm. Local residents first noticed a strong foul odour emanating from the riverbank, prompting them to investigate. Upon entering the shallow waters, they discovered a corpse concealed beneath floating water hyacinths and immediately alerted law enforcement and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Police from Maheshpur Police Station, accompanied by BGB personnel, arrived at the scene and retrieved the body from approximately 10 metres inside Bangladeshi territory from the zero line. Officials confirmed that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, suggesting it had been in the water for at least three to four days.
Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan stated that the identity of the deceased remains unknown. However, investigators recovered a passport from the victim’s pocket, which is currently being examined to determine whether it can help establish the individual’s identity.
The body is set to be sent to the morgue at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital following completion of the inquest report.
This is the second such incident in a short span. Earlier, on Monday night at around 9:00 pm, another unidentified young man’s body was recovered from the same stretch of the Ichamati River. Authorities have yet to identify that victim as well.
The repeated recovery of bodies from the same location has heightened anxiety in the area, with many locals expressing fears of cross-border crime or foul play. Given the river’s proximity to the international boundary, officials are not ruling out the possibility that the bodies may have drifted from across the border or are linked to illegal activities in the frontier zone.

Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam, commanding officer of the local BGB battalion, confirmed that the body was found within Bangladeshi territory but close to the border, reinforcing the sensitivity of the situation. He noted that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the incidents are interconnected.
Security agencies are now coordinating efforts to verify the passport details and trace the identity of the deceased. Forensic examination and further inquiries may provide clues about the cause of death and whether criminal activity was involved.
Residents in Maheshpur and surrounding villages have expressed growing concern over safety, particularly given the unusual frequency of such discoveries in a typically quiet rural border area. Some have called for increased patrols and surveillance along the riverbanks.
Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to uncover the truth behind the incidents. Until then, the mystery surrounding the two unidentified bodies continues to cast a shadow over the region, underscoring the challenges of policing sensitive border zones where jurisdictional complexities often complicate investigations.
