Following the death of notorious drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, violence has surged across Mexico, raising concerns over the safety of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reassured fans and stakeholders that the tournament remains fully secure and on track.

Speaking to AFP in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino said, “I am very reassured. Everything is fine. It will be fantastic.” He emphasised that FIFA’s primary focus remains the safety of players, officials, and fans attending the tournament.

Mexico, alongside co-hosts the United States and Canada, will host the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July 2026. Despite the recent surge in violence following the military operation that killed El Mencho, FIFA has maintained confidence in the organisers’ ability to ensure a safe and successful tournament.

El Mencho, the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed during a targeted military operation. His death triggered a wave of unrest across the country, particularly in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state. Reports indicate that at least 74 people were killed during clashes between security forces and suspected cartel members.

Cartel affiliates reportedly imposed roadblocks in 20 out of Mexico’s 32 states, setting vehicles and businesses ablaze. The images of unrest spread internationally, causing temporary concerns about the World Cup’s safety just four months ahead of its kickoff.

Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured the public and international observers that there is no risk to tournament attendees. “Full security measures have been put in place to protect all fans,” she said.

Guadalajara will host four group-stage matches, including a high-profile first-round encounter between Uruguay and Spain. In addition, the World Cup qualification playoff tournament at the end of March will determine the final two teams to join the main event. Guadalajara and Monterrey will jointly host these decisive matches.

Infantino has expressed full confidence in Mexico’s preparations and security arrangements. FIFA’s attention now remains firmly on finalising logistics, stadium readiness, and ensuring robust security protocols are in place for the global event.
