Detectives in southern Bangladesh have arrested a middle-aged man in Pirojpur district after recovering a foreign-made pistol, a magazine and live ammunition during a late-night operation.
The suspect, identified as Md Alim Khan, 49, was detained in Bhandaria upazila following what police described as a “credible intelligence tip-off”. The operation was conducted shortly before midnight on Tuesday, 24 February, in the Uttar Shialkathi In the area of Vitabaria Union.
According to police officials, a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Pirojpur District Police launched the campaign at around 11:30 pm near the under-construction brick-soling road in front of the Farzane Rasul Jame Mosque in Uttar Shialkathi village. Officers had positioned themselves in the এলাকায় after receiving information that an individual was in possession of an illegal firearm.
When law enforcement personnel moved in, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee on foot. He was swiftly apprehended after a brief chase. Subsequent questioning at the scene led officers to conduct a search of his residence.
At a press briefing held on Wednesday Noon, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Ziaur Rahman confirmed the arrest and the seizure of the weapons . He stated that, acting on information provided by the detainee, detectives recovered a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and five rounds of live ammunition concealed beneath the mattress of a bed in the suspect’s bedroom.
Police said the rescue items have been seized as evidence and are being processed in accordance with standard forensic and legal procedures.
| Item Recovered | Quantity | Location Found |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign-made pistol | 1 | Under mattress in bedroom |
| Magazine | 1 | Under mattress in bedroom |
| Live ammunition | 5 rounds | Under mattress in bedroom |
Md Ziaur Rahman added that preparations are under way to file a case against the accused under the Arms Act. The case will be lodged by Md Ariful Islam, Officer-in-Charge of the Detective Branch in Pirojpur.
Although investigators have not yet disclosed whether the suspect has any prior criminal record or links to organised crime, officials indicated that the arrest forms part of an ongoing drive to curb the circulation of illegal firearms in the district. Police have intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations in recent months amid concerns over the proliferation of unlicensed weapons in rural and semi-urban areas.
Authorities emphasised that the possession of unlicensed firearms constitutes a serious criminal offence under Bangladeshi law and carries significant penalties, including imprisonment. The investigation remains ongoing, and further legal steps are expected following the formal filing of charges.
