In a shocking incident in Bhola Sadar Upazila, a three-and-a-half-month-old baby girl, named Zidni, was abducted on Wednesday morning (25 February) after her mother was rendered unconscious with a sedative. The incident occurred near Malerhat Bridge in the West Ilisha Union while the mother, Sumaiya Begum, was taking her infant for routine vaccination.

According to local sources, Zidni is the third child of Sumaiya Begum and Abdur Rob. Nearly five hours after the incident, Sumaiya has yet to regain consciousness. She has been admitted to Bhola 250-Bed General Hospital for medical treatment. Following the incident, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Coast Guard teams inspected the scene and launched a coordinated search operation to recover the child.

Incident Details

Family and police reports indicate that Sumaiya Begum left her home in Charpata village with Zidni in the morning to visit Malerhat Community Clinic for the infant’s vaccination. En route, two women approached her near the bridge, offering her money as a ruse. When Sumaiya took the two-hundred-taka note, she was immediately incapacitated by a sedative administered by the assailants, who then seized Zidni and fled in an auto-rickshaw. Sumaiya collapsed at a nearby relative’s house.

Despite frantic search efforts by family members, the child remained missing as of 3 pm. Zidni’s uncle, Md. Josim Chakladar, explained that the two women used a cunning approach to distract Sumaiya and hand her the banknote, which was when she was rendered unconscious. The family has sought the immediate intervention of law enforcement agencies to secure the infant’s safe return.

Response by Authorities

Bhola Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (Investigation), Md. Zia Uddin, stated that the area has been put under heavy surveillance, including public announcements via microphones and the establishment of check-posts. He affirmed that the police are taking all necessary steps to ensure the child’s recovery.
