Tottenham Hotspur and the Netherlands national team have suffered a significant setback as attacking midfielder Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The 23-year-old sustained a severe knee injury that has officially ended his aspirations of competing in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The injury occurred during last Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which Tottenham won 1-0. During the second half, Simons was involved in a heavy collision with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno. Although the Dutch international initially attempted to stand, he collapsed shortly after and required immediate medical attention. He was subsequently carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
Follow-up medical examinations and scans have confirmed a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. Tottenham Hotspur released an official statement confirming the diagnosis:
“We can confirm that Xavi Simons has sustained a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming weeks before commencing his rehabilitation under the supervision of our medical staff.”
Simons has been a consistent presence for Tottenham this season, featuring in 41 matches across all competitions and scoring five goals. In the Premier League specifically, he started 19 of the 28 matches in which he appeared. His absence comes at a critical juncture for the club; Tottenham currently sits 18th in the league table with 34 points from 34 matches, trailing 17th-placed West Ham United by two points. With only four matches remaining, the club faces a rigorous battle to avoid relegation without one of their primary creative outlets.
For the Netherlands, the loss of Simons is a blow to their World Cup preparations. The 2026 tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins on 11 June. The Netherlands is scheduled to open its Group F campaign against Japan on 14 June. Given that recovery from an ACL rupture typically requires six to nine months, Simons will be unable to participate.

Simons joins a growing list of high-profile players sidelined by ACL injuries ahead of the 2026 World Cup, including Brazil’s Rodrygo, Germany’s Serge Gnabry, France’s Hugo Ekitiké, and Argentina’s Juan Foyth and Joaquín Panichelli.
Furthermore, several other stars remain doubtful. Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal has been ruled out for the season, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah sustained a hamstring injury last Saturday. Should Salah’s injury prove season-ending, it would mark his final appearance for Liverpool, following his previous announcement that he intends to depart the club at the end of the current campaign. Other players currently facing fitness concerns include Éder Militão, Arda Güler, and Estêvão.
Reflecting on the situation via social media, Simons stated: “People say life can be cruel, and today it feels exactly like that. The season came to a sudden halt, and I am still trying to process it. To be honest, I am very saddened.”
