40 Arrested in Special Operation at Geneva Camp, Mohammadpur

In a special operation targeting narcotics and criminal activities at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 40 individuals, including drug traffickers, dealers, arms suppliers, and those storing petrol bombs. The area is infamous as a hub for drugs and criminal networks.

The operation began on Saturday (20 September) at 4:00 PM and continued until early Sunday (21 September).

Items Seized During the Raid

Item Quantity
Petrol bombs 2
Molotov cocktails 8
Samurai swords 6
Helmets 5
Knives 3
Stolen mobile phones 11
Heroin 500 grams

The items were confiscated from the arrested individuals, and the Molotov cocktails were later defused by the DMP Bomb Disposal Unit.

At a DMP media briefing held at Minto Road at 12:00 PM on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division, Md. Ibne Mizan, confirmed the arrests. He stated: “Geneva Camp is a notorious spot where various crimes are regularly organised. The area is well-known for drug trafficking. To combat this, we conducted a special operation with 120 police personnel from Saturday evening until early Sunday morning. Forty individuals involved in drug trafficking, dealing, arms supply, and petrol bomb storage were arrested.”

He added that many of the arrested individuals worked as associates of local drug lords such as Bunia Sohel, Picchi Raja, and Chua Selim. Interrogations have revealed additional names, and further arrests are planned.

DC Ibne Mizan explained that while law enforcement regularly conducts operations to control drug trafficking, complete eradication is challenging: “We can control drug activities through regular raids and arrests, but total elimination is not feasible. Our aim is to maintain maximum control over traffickers and users and reduce crime in the area.”

He further highlighted that crime in Mohammadpur surged after 5 August, with previously released criminals returning and committing offences.

“Over the past six to seven months, we have brought more than 3,000 offenders under legal control. By conducting continuous operations in areas with high criminal activity, we have managed to reduce crime. Our operations are ongoing, and we hope the situation will improve further.”

Despite repeated arrests, many criminals return to illegal activities shortly after release. DC Ibne Mizan stressed: “Our operations aim to control the criminal elements in Geneva Camp. We are making every effort to keep drug traffickers and users in check, and we hope to achieve the desired level of law and order.”

This operation underscores the persistent efforts of DMP to tackle crime and drug trafficking in one of Dhaka’s most notorious neighbourhoods, while also highlighting the limitations of law enforcement in fully eradicating deeply entrenched criminal networks.
