Aitana Bonmatí’s New Record: Three Consecutive Ballon d’Or Titles

On Monday night, under the dazzling lights of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Aitana Bonmatí once again etched her name into footballing history. The Barcelona midfielder secured her third consecutive Ballon d’Or, a feat that elevates her alongside footballing greats such as Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, and Marco van Basten.

In the modern era, only Lionel Messi (8 titles) and Cristiano Ronaldo (5 titles) have managed such sustained excellence.

Despite setbacks in both the UEFA Champions League and the European Championship finals, Bonmatí’s brilliance never faded. She played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s domestic dominance while earning recognition as the best player in both tournaments she narrowly missed winning.

Competition Outcome Individual Honour
La Liga Champions Key Midfielder
Copa del Rey Champions Outstanding Contributor
Supercopa de España Champions Team Leader
UEFA Champions League Finalists Best Player
UEFA Women’s Euro Finalists Best Player

This combination of team triumphs and personal accolades added unparalleled lustre to her campaign.

With the golden trophy in hand, Bonmatí spoke with humility and emotion: “This stage still makes me a little nervous. If it were possible, I would share this award with everyone, because it is the result of an extraordinary season.”

She paid heartfelt tribute to Andrés Iniesta and Xavi, crediting their influence on her playing style: “I have learnt so much from them. Their impact on my football will remain forever.”

Bonmatí also celebrated a historic breakthrough for women’s football: “This is the first time we are receiving the same awards as the men. We have fought for equality for a long time, and I hope this continues.”

The evening was a proud one for Spain. Alongside Bonmatí at the top, Mariona Caldentey secured second place, while Alexia Putellas (4th) and Patri Guijarro (6th) also featured within the top ten. This dominance in the seventh edition of the Women’s Ballon d’Or underscored Spain’s growing stature in world football.

By clinching her third Ballon d’Or in a row, Bonmatí now stands in the illustrious company of Cruyff, Platini, Messi, and Van Basten. In a sport where male and female achievements have often been measured separately, her relentless consistency demonstrates that talent, hard work, and determination recognise no gender boundaries.

Where she will stop, only time can tell. For now, however, Spain, Barcelona, and the global football community are united in declaring:

Aitana Bonmatí — a name written in golden letters.
