On Sunday, China inaugurated the world’s tallest bridge for vehicular traffic, surpassing the previous record-holder in the same province and establishing a new global benchmark.
Key Features of the Bridge
According to AFP, the bridge towers high above the canyon, linking two sides of the mountainous region.
State media released drone footage on Sunday showing vehicles crossing the enormous blue support towers that stretch into the clouds.
The opening ceremony was attended by project engineers, local officials, and numerous guests, who expressed pride and excitement during live interviews.
Zhang Yin, head of the provincial transport department, stated at a press conference that travel time between the two sides of the canyon has been reduced from two hours to just two minutes via the bridge.
He added that the bridge’s opening would significantly enhance regional connectivity and boost economic and social development in the area.
Construction and Structural Details
China has heavily invested in large-scale infrastructure projects over recent decades, particularly in Guizhou Province, where thousands of bridges have been constructed. The province now hosts two of the world’s tallest bridges, with nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges located there, according to Xinhua.
While Huajiajiang Grand Canyon Bridge holds the record for structural height, the world’s highest bridge title by overall elevation still belongs to the Millau Viaduct in France, standing at 343 metres.
This monumental engineering feat underscores China’s ongoing commitment to rapid infrastructure development, enhancing connectivity in its mountainous regions and setting new global standards in bridge construction.
