World’s Longest Driverless Metro Launches in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia continues to astonish the world with its preparations as a tourist destination and its investments in modern infrastructure. As part of this vision, the Riyadh Metro, the world’s longest driverless metro system, has been launched in the capital city.

Opened in December last year, this fully automated high-speed rail network is not merely a mode of transport, but a new experience for travellers and residents alike.

Key Features of the Riyadh Metro

Feature Details
Total Length 176 kilometres
Number of Lines 6
Stations 85
Construction Cost $22 billion
Notable Tourist Stations Kasr Al Hokm, KAFD, STC, Western Station

Tourist-Focused Stations:

  • Kasr Al Hokm Station, located in Riyadh’s historic centre, was designed by a Norwegian architectural firm. Spanning seven floors and extending 40 metres underground, it features indoor gardens, art installations, and modern shopping facilities.
  • KAFD Station displays a sculpture by American artist Alexander Calder.
  • STC Station takes inspiration from the limestone formations of Saudi Arabia’s Tuwayq Mountains.
  • Western Station serves the Al-Suwaidi area.

The Riyadh Metro incorporates energy-efficient technologies, including a regenerative braking system and solar panels.

  • Fare: Extremely affordable at just 4 Saudi Riyals (approximately $1) for a two-hour journey.
  • Passenger Comfort: Separate carriages are provided for men, families, and first-class passengers.

Residents report that the metro has not only simplified commuting, but also enhanced social interaction, allowing people from different social backgrounds to mix easily within the city.

Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Sultan, CEO of the Riyadh City Commission, said:
“This project has transformed the city’s landscape. It is tied to economic, social, environmental, and urban development.”

Within just six months of operation, the metro has served over 18 million passengers. Plans are already underway to expand the network further, signalling that the Riyadh Metro is more than a transport system—it is a symbol of the city’s modernity and ambition.
