Three Scientists Awarded Nobel Prize in Medicine

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to three scientists: Mary Branko and Fred Ramsdell from the United States, and Shimon Sagaguchi from Japan. They have been recognised for their groundbreaking research on peripheral immune tolerance.

Peripheral immune tolerance is a crucial process in the immune system that prevents unwanted or excessive immune responses against the body’s own components (self-antigens) and harmless foreign substances, such as certain food components or beneficial intestinal bacteria. This mechanism ensures that the immune system can defend against harmful pathogens without attacking the body itself or harmless agents.

The official announcement of this year’s Nobel laureates in medicine was made by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, on Monday at 3:30 PM Bangladesh time.

Prize Details

Laureates Country Research Contribution
Mary Branko United States Peripheral immune tolerance
Fred Ramsdell United States Peripheral immune tolerance
Shimon Sagaguchi Japan Peripheral immune tolerance

Each laureate will receive:

  • A medal,
  • A diploma, and
  • A monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million USD or 146.1 million BDT). If multiple recipients share the prize, the amount is divided among them.

Nobel Prize Administration

  • The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announces the Nobel Prize in Medicine each year.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry.

This recognition honours the scientists’ significant contributions to understanding immune system regulation, with potential implications for autoimmune disease treatment, organ transplantation, and immunotherapy.
