Bangladesh created history with the bat in the Sylhet Test against Ireland. For the first time in their Test history, all of Bangladesh’s top four batters scored fifties—and impressively, each of them crossed 80 runs or more.
Here’s how the top order performed in this record-breaking innings:
| Batter | Runs Scored |
|---|---|
| Mahmudul Hasan Joy | 171 |
| Shadman Islam | 80 |
| Mominul Haque | 82 |
| Najmul Hossain Shanto | 100 |
This marks the 11th instance in Test history where a team’s top four batters have all scored 80 or more in a single innings. Across Test cricket, there have been 83 instances of the top four scoring at least fifty, while the top five doing so has happened 24 times, the top six six times, and the top seven only once — by Pakistan against India in Karachi, 2006.
In that memorable Test, Pakistan’s first seven batters all passed 50, with Faisal Iqbal top-scoring on 139. Interestingly, India’s Irfan Pathan claimed a hat-trick in the very first over of that match.
There are only two other occasions when seven players in an innings made fifty or more — England against Australia at Old Trafford in 1934 and Sri Lanka against England at Lord’s in 2006.
Back in 2007, Bangladesh were on the receiving end of such dominance — when India’s top four all scored centuries in Mirpur.
In the ongoing Sylhet Test, five Bangladeshi batters have already scored fifties, marking only the fifth time in their history this has happened. One more fifty would make it a new national record.
Beyond the numbers, this innings highlights Bangladesh’s newfound stability and depth in Test cricket — a promising sign for the future of their red-ball journey.
