Those Who Do Business in the Name of Religion Want Women to Stay at Home: Salahuddin

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmad stated that those who do business in the name of religion want women to remain at home. He said that such people sell “tickets to heaven” to engage in politics. They aim to reduce women’s working hours so that women stay confined to their homes and organizations are discouraged from employing them.

He made these remarks on Friday morning at a silent march organized by the Women and Children Rights Forum in Dhaka, aimed at preventing increasing violence and disrespect against women.

Salahuddin further stated that for the country’s progress, women must be given priority, and their social status and security must be ensured. He emphasized that there should be no discrimination based on religion and that everyone in the country should enjoy equal rights.

He noted that the silent march is a protest gathering attended by descendants of the freedom fighters of 1971. Salahuddin mentioned that the descendants of Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, Begum Zia, are represented at the event. He also highlighted that in the past, acts of violence against women were not properly prosecuted, and perpetrators exploited legal loopholes to escape punishment.

Regarding the July Charter, he said, “A directive was issued in Bangladesh yesterday. Our party has stated that we will adhere to the July National Charter exactly as we signed it. However, if undue pressure is imposed on us, we will consider our course of action. We do not wish to allow forced directives to amend the constitution.”
