Cyclone Alert in the Bay of Bengal

A strong possibility of a cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal has been indicated by Mostafa Kamal Palash, the chief meteorologist of Weather.com. He stated that by 26 November, there will be greater certainty about how powerful the potential cyclone may become and which areas it is likely to strike upon making landfall.

He shared this information in his second update on the cyclone posted on his verified Facebook page on Sunday afternoon. In the same update, Palash also offered several pieces of advice for farmers and fishermen.

In his Facebook post, he mentioned that according to the most recent weather forecast received on Sunday (23 November), a low-pressure system may form on 26 or 27 November in the south-eastern Bay of Bengal, specifically to the south of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This low-pressure area is expected to gradually intensify into a depression, then a deep depression, and eventually develop into a cyclone. Although all forecasting models agree that a cyclone is likely to form, they differ regarding how strong it may become and the precise location where it might make landfall.

Palash added that the cyclone could strike anywhere along the stretch between India’s Andhra Pradesh coast and the coastal region of Chattogram in Bangladesh.

He reiterated that by 26 November, there will be clearer information on both the intensity of the potential cyclone and the region where it is expected to hit land.

Advice for Farmers

Due to the potential cyclone, there is a strong likelihood of light to moderate rainfall across Bangladesh between 3 and 5 December. Therefore, farmers are advised to complete the harvesting and threshing of ripe Aman paddy currently in the fields. Growers of winter vegetables have been encouraged to keep the possible rainfall in mind while planning seed sowing and irrigation.

Dry and sunny weather is expected to persist across the country until 2 December.

Advice for Sea-Going Fishermen

The northern Bay of Bengal may begin to experience rough conditions after 1 December. As a precaution, all fishing trawlers have been advised to prepare to return to shore by 1 December. Additionally, fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea after 30 November.

Weather Forecast for Travelling to St Martin’s Island

The northern Bay of Bengal is expected to become rough after 1 December.

Between 1 and 5 December, the sea route between Teknaf and St Martin’s Island is likely to be extremely rough, and travellers are urged to remain cautious.
