In last night’s thrilling 2–2 draw between Pafos and Monaco, veteran Brazilian defender David Luiz made headlines once again. At 38 years and 218 days, Luiz scored in the 18th minute, claiming the position of second-oldest scorer in Champions League history.
Previously, Italian legend Francesco Totti held the spot, scoring at 38 years and 59 days for Roma against CSKA Moscow in 2014. Although Luiz falls short of the record set by Pepe (40 years, 290 days in 2023), the goal marks a significant milestone in Luiz’s career: it is his first goal in the Champions League in eight years.
| Player | Club | Age | Opponent | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| David Luiz | Pafos | 38y 218d | Monaco | 2025 |
| Francesco Totti | Roma | 38y 59d | CSKA Moscow | 2014 |
| Pepe | Real Madrid | 40y 290d | Shakhtar Donetsk | 2023 |
Opta highlighted an additional fun fact: Luiz’s goal is the first Champions League goal by a player born in the 1980s, scored against Monaco’s goalkeeper Lucas Hradecky, also from the 1980s.
The goal has sparked discussion across Europe about the longevity of professional players. Luiz’s performance underlines that age is no barrier for experienced footballers, particularly those with tactical acumen and leadership on the field.
After the match, Luiz said:
“It’s an honour to score at this stage in my career. Football is as much about preparation and intelligence as it is about youth. I hope this inspires younger players that determination and fitness can extend your career.”
Pafos supporters celebrated the historic goal, recognising Luiz as a player who continues to defy expectations. His goal adds a unique chapter to the club’s European story.
