Dhaka University has issued an official decision regarding the continuation of Honours fourth-year and Master’s final examinations, following a period of uncertainty triggered by recent seismic activity and the subsequent inspection of residential halls. The announcement comes a day after the university authorities confirmed that winter vacation would be merged with the suspension period required for structural inspections. The residential halls and academic activities are scheduled to resume from 28 December.
In a detailed statement released on Thursday, the university administration clarified its position on the examinations that had already commenced in various departments and institutes. According to the press release, departmental academic committees may continue with the ongoing Honours fourth-year (eighth semester) and Master’s final examinations. This continuation, however, must be based on the opinion of the respective faculty deans, in coordination with the Office of the Controller of Examinations, and with the agreement of all registered candidates.
The decision follows numerous appeals from general students and representatives of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). Many students had expressed concerns about academic delays, session congestion, and the potential impact on job applications and higher education opportunities if examinations were suspended indefinitely.
The university made it clear that students wishing to stay in the residential halls for the purpose of attending examinations must submit an application to the hall administration. This measure aims to maintain proper monitoring and ensure that accommodation is provided only to those with essential academic commitments during the inspection and repair period.
At present, several residential halls are undergoing repair and renovation work, initiated after structural assessments identified the need for safety improvements. The authorities emphasised that these renovation programmes will remain a priority throughout this period. Students have been urged to cooperate fully with the hall administrations and construction personnel so that repair work can progress efficiently and without obstruction.
The university administration further stated that cooperation from DUCSU and various hall student representatives will be crucial in ensuring that all students are able to participate in their examinations. Their assistance will also be required in organising temporary accommodation arrangements for students whose halls may be partially restricted due to ongoing repair work.
In its statement, the administration acknowledged the anxiety felt by many students due to the unexpected disruption caused by the earthquake and subsequent safety reviews. It reiterated that the decision to merge the temporary closure with the winter vacation was taken to minimise academic loss while ensuring the safety of students who depend on campus housing.
The press release concluded by assuring students that the university remains committed to maintaining academic continuity without compromising safety standards. Authorities also pledged to maintain transparent communication with students so that any further changes to schedules or hall accessibility can be conveyed promptly and efficiently.
With examinations set to continue and residential halls preparing to reopen on 28 December, the university community is now focused on resuming academic activities in a safe and orderly manner.
