The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place tonight (Friday) at the John F. Kennedy Center, determining which teams will be grouped together. Attention will focus on the so-called ‘group of death’, a group where multiple favourites could be eliminated before the knockout stage. These groups typically include more than two strong teams with very close rankings.
FIFA has decided to place the play-off winners in pot four, meaning Italy (ranked 12), Denmark (ranked 21) or Turkey (ranked 25) could end up there. Teams drawn into this pot will face significant challenges.
Pot 1: Tough teams: Spain, Argentina, England, France. Easier teams: Brazil, Belgium, United States, Canada, Mexico.
Pot 2: Tough teams: Croatia, Uruguay. Easier teams: Austria, Iran, Senegal.
Pot 3: Tough teams: Norway, Egypt, Algeria. Easier teams: Qatar, Paraguay, Uzbekistan.
Pot 4: Tough teams: UEFA qualifiers (Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Poland), Ghana. Easier teams: Curaçao, Jordan, Haiti, intercontinental play-off winners.
Potential Groups of Death:
Group of Death 1: Spain (1), Colombia (13), Egypt (34), Italy (UEFA qualifier).
Group of Death 2: England (4), Uruguay (16), Ivory Coast (42), UEFA qualifier.
Group of Death 3: Argentina (2), Croatia (10), Norway (29), Ivory Coast (42).
Group of Death 4: France (3), Uruguay (16), Algeria (35), Saudi Arabia (60).
The draw will start with pot one, followed by pots two, three and four, with FIFA ensuring no more than one team from the same confederation is placed in a group, except UEFA, which can have up to two teams in a group.
