Miguel’s Next Album Held Back by Label Dispute

Miguel, the acclaimed R&B singer behind hits such as Adorn, is back with his album Caos, ending a near eight-year absence from full-length releases. Yet, despite his triumphant return, Miguel already has another album completed and waiting—but he cannot release it due to contractual obligations with RCA Records.

In a revealing interview with Genius, the singer clarified that he does not intend to leave fans waiting years again for new music. He even went so far as to declare that the unreleased project is, in his view, “better” than Caos. “If it were entirely my choice, the album would already be available,” Miguel confirmed.

The issue, he explained, goes beyond timing. Miguel finds the terms of his current record deal restrictive and inequitable, a sentiment shared by many artists navigating the complexities of the modern music industry. “I would rather release it independently than allow them to benefit from an unfair deal,” he said bluntly.

While he acknowledges the presence of label executives who genuinely aim to support him, Miguel stressed that the existing structure leaves little room for true creative freedom. He views this situation as symptomatic of a broader industry challenge, in which artists are often forced to fight for control over their own work.

Securing ownership of his intellectual property has given Miguel the leverage to consider a more independent path in the future. “There are absolutely things I would prefer to do as an independent artist,” he stated. Beyond his own music, Miguel’s ambitions now include mentoring and guiding emerging artists to ensure they are treated fairly and their work is protected.

Reflecting on Caos, Miguel admitted that returning to album cycles after such a long hiatus stirred a wide range of emotions. He was surprised and moved by the feedback from his peers, mentors, and collaborators, many of whom expressed admiration and offered thoughtful commentary on the project.

“It’s been really endearing to receive such detailed feedback from fellow artists,” Miguel said. “It’s reaffirming and incredibly motivating.”

As Miguel looks toward the next decade, he plans to focus not only on his creative output but also on creating systems that empower and safeguard other artists. His message is clear: while industry barriers may delay releases, his commitment to artistic integrity and independence will remain unwavering.
