Bangladeshi Soldiers Killed in Sudan Return Home

The bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, tragically killed in a drone attack while serving under the United Nations Mission in Sudan, have returned to Dhaka. They will be accorded full state honours, with funerals to be held in their homeland.

On Saturday, 20 December, shortly before 11:30 a.m., the plane carrying the six fallen soldiers landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The aircraft had departed from Entebbe Airport in Uganda the previous evening at 7 p.m. Bangladesh time, covering a long international route to reach the country.

Eight other peacekeepers sustained injuries in the attack and are currently receiving treatment in Nairobi, Kenya. The Bangladesh Army has confirmed that most are now stable, though one remains under close observation following surgery.

The incident occurred on 13 December at the Kadugli Logistics Base in Abeih, Sudan. Between approximately 3:40 p.m. and 3:50 p.m. local time, an armed separatist group launched a sudden drone strike on the base, killing six Bangladeshi soldiers instantly.

To date, 168 Bangladeshi personnel across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police have laid down their lives for global peace. The six soldiers lost in Sudan now join this revered legacy, further honouring the nation’s flag on the international stage.
