In a remarkable celebration of music and heritage, Sangeet Guru has recently presented three iconic songs, marking a unique tribute to Bangladesh’s cultural and historical legacy. Among them, Rabindranath Tagore’s immortal composition “Amar Shonar Bangla, Ami Tomay Bhalobashi” was unveiled today in honour of Victory Day 2025. The other two songs featured are “Dhondhanyo Pushpobhara Amader Ei Bosundhora” and George Harrison’s “Bangladesh”, performed by the acclaimed Bangladeshi band Miles.
“Amar Shonar Bangla” was penned by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as a patriotic response to the British decision to partition Bengal, expressing profound love for the land, its people, and its culture. From the 1960s onwards, it was performed widely in Dhaka and beyond, becoming a source of inspiration during the Liberation War of 1971. Broadcasts from the Bangladesh Betar, among other venues, helped galvanise public sentiment towards independence.
Following Bangladesh’s independence in 1972, the government officially adopted the first ten lines of Tagore’s composition as the national anthem, later orchestrated by Samar Das. For this year’s Victory Day, the anthem has been masterfully rendered on flute by Kaipru Marma and presented by Prothom Alo as a humble yet heartfelt tribute.
The timeless song “Dhondhanyo Pushpobhara Amader Ei Bosundhora”, penned and composed by Dwijendralal Ray, continues to evoke the same passion a century after its creation. On 15 November, during the 27th Anniversary gathering of Prothom Alo, the piece was performed on flute by Kamrul Ahmed, captivating the audience. Today, it has been officially released for Victory Day celebrations.
Miles Revives George Harrison’s ‘Bangladesh’
The legendary Concert for Bangladesh, held at Madison Square Garden, New York, on 1 August 1971, was organised by sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar to support the Bangladesh Liberation struggle. The concert featured George Harrison, guitarist of the legendary band The Beatles, performing the eponymous song “Bangladesh” in solidarity with the nation.
In 2011, the celebrated Bangladeshi band Miles performed “Bangladesh” at the Meril–Prothom Alo Awards, introducing a Bengali adaptation by Aftab Mahmud Khurshid. On 14 December, this rendition was re-released, connecting modern audiences with the historic melody and reinforcing the spirit of remembrance and national pride.
