Sir Fazle Hasan Abed: A Life of Lasting Impact

“Development is not merely the eradication of poverty; it is the enabling of people to realise their full potential.” This guiding principle was the cornerstone of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s extraordinary life. He was a visionary whose quiet yet transformative efforts left an indelible mark on Bangladesh and the wider world.

Born on 27 April 1936 in Baniachong, Habiganj, Abed’s formative years were shaped by compassion, a deep sense of responsibility, and unwavering respect for human dignity. These values became the foundation of a lifetime devoted to social change and human development.

As a forward-thinking entrepreneur and pragmatic thinker, Abed achieved notable success in the corporate sector during the Pakistan era. However, the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War profoundly altered his perspective. Witnessing the suffering, devastation, and extreme poverty of the newly independent nation, he was moved to act. Driven by empathy and responsibility, he founded the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) in 1972. What began as a modest initiative would grow into the world’s largest non-governmental development organisation.

Under Sir Abed’s visionary leadership, BRAC made pioneering contributions across education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, microfinance, poverty alleviation, and social justice. He firmly believed that sustainable development could only be achieved by unlocking the inherent potential and capabilities of individuals. His relentless efforts transformed BRAC from a charitable organisation into a powerful movement against poverty and inequality, impacting the lives of millions globally.

In 2018, Sir Abed stepped down as BRAC’s Chairman, assuming the title of Emeritus Chairman—a testament to his global recognition and enduring influence. Throughout his lifetime, he received numerous prestigious honours, including a knighthood, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Global Citizen Award, the World Food Prize, and various national and international accolades.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed passed away on 20 December 2019. Yet his vision, principles, and unwavering commitment to human welfare continue to illuminate the lives of countless people. He was a man who shaped history not for power, but for humanity. Today, his legacy remains a beacon of inspiration, and the admiration, respect, and gratitude of the world endure as a tribute to his remarkable life of service and sacrifice.
