Why did Djokovic leave the tennis organisation he founded?

World No. 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic has announced his departure from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the organisation he co-founded in 2021. Citing concerns over governance and transparency, Djokovic has decided to step away from the body he helped create to give professional players a stronger, independent voice.

The PTPA was established jointly by Djokovic and Canadian player Vasek Pospisil with the primary goal of advocating for players’ rights and ensuring that athletes have an independent platform within the professional tennis ecosystem. At its inception, the organisation was widely praised for challenging the status quo in tennis administration and promoting player-led decision-making.

However, on Sunday, 4 January, Djokovic made the dramatic announcement of his resignation. In a post shared on social media platform X, he explained that the organisation’s current values no longer align with his own principles and that he intends to focus on tennis and family for the foreseeable future.

Djokovic stated, “I am proud of the vision we had when establishing the PTPA and the efforts made to secure players’ rights. Yet it has become clear that my personal values and working methods no longer fully align with the organisation’s direction. At this stage, my priority will be tennis and family.”

Reports suggest that the decision was influenced by differences over recent legal actions initiated by the PTPA against the ATP and WTA. While the organisation pursued litigation on several fronts, Djokovic reportedly disagreed with some of the approaches and strategic decisions, ultimately prompting his exit.

The table below summarises Djokovic’s involvement with the PTPA:

Year Event Details
2021 PTPA founded Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil establish the association to represent players’ interests independently
2021–2025 Advocacy & growth Organisation advocates for players’ rights, engages in discussions with ATP and WTA
2026 Departure Djokovic resigns citing differences in governance, values, and strategic direction

Djokovic’s resignation marks a significant moment in professional tennis, highlighting ongoing debates about player representation, governance, and transparency within elite sports organisations. Analysts suggest that while the PTPA will continue to advocate for players, Djokovic’s absence may shift its influence and public perception in the coming years.
