Manchester United have officially ended their short-lived partnership with Portuguese manager Rúben Amorim after just 14 months at Old Trafford. The club announced that Amorim has been relieved of his duties, with former player and academy coach Darren Fletcher stepping in as caretaker manager for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
The decision comes after tensions between Amorim and the club’s senior hierarchy became increasingly apparent. Reports indicate that the Portuguese coach felt undermined, particularly in matters of the transfer market, where he did not receive the level of support he had expected. Sources suggest that these frustrations had been simmering for some time, signalling that the relationship was beyond repair.
Amorim’s frustrations boiled over following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United. He reportedly expressed his desire to operate not just as a “coach” on matchdays but as a full manager with complete control over footballing decisions. He had also hinted that he would consider leaving the club at the end of his 18-month contract—a prospect the club’s board opted not to wait for. Within 24 hours, United confirmed the termination, stating that the decision was made to ensure the club could focus on finishing the season in a respectable league position.
A club statement read: “This was a difficult decision, but one taken with the best interests of the team in mind. While Rúben Amorim’s commitment is acknowledged, the board believes that under his tenure, the team has not progressed in the manner required.”

Stepping into the breach is 41-year-old Darren Fletcher, a former Scottish international and current head coach of United’s under-18 team. Fletcher enjoyed a decorated playing career at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. However, this will be his first experience managing the senior team.
The club will be looking to Fletcher not only to stabilise the side but also to inject fresh energy into a squad that has struggled for consistency under Amorim. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if the former midfield stalwart can translate his on-field success into managerial effectiveness, at a time when Manchester United are determined to maintain their challenge for European qualification.
