Prized Hilsa Catch Fetches Record Price in Kuakata

In a remarkable display of the enduring prestige associated with Bangladesh’s national fish, a single Hilsa (Ilish) was sold for a staggering 5,456 BDT in the coastal town of Kuakata. The transaction occurred late in the afternoon on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, drawing significant attention from local traders and enthusiasts at the Jhaubon area of Patuakhali.

A Rare Winter Catch

The specimen, weighing a substantial 1.5 kilograms, was hauled from the Bay of Bengal by Masud Majhi, a seasoned local fisherman. While Hilsa is typically more abundant during the monsoon months, large specimens are increasingly rare during the winter season, making this particular catch a highly sought-after commodity.

Masud Majhi expressed his gratitude following the successful haul. “Large Hilsa are currently very scarce in the sea,” he explained. “By the grace of the Almighty, this fish was exceptionally large. While the overall volume of the catch was modest, I am immensely pleased with the value this single fish has provided.”

Competitive Bidding at Auction

Upon returning to the Kuakata municipal market, the fish was brought to the ‘Ghorami Fish’ depot, where a competitive bidding process ensued. The auction concluded when Md. Hasan, the proprietor of the wholesale outlet ‘Maacher Bari’, secured the fish for the aforementioned sum. Hasan noted that he purchased the delicacy with the intent of a swift resale, betting on the high demand for premium-quality Hilsa during the off-season.

Expert Commentary on Regional Trends

Apu Saha, the Senior Fisheries Officer for Kalapara Upazila, provided context to the sale, noting that while large Hilsa are occasionally caught in the winter, a 1.5kg specimen is a “rare find” at this time of year. He attributed the high price to the “prestige and superior taste” associated with larger fish, which often triggers aggressive bidding among wholesalers and elite consumers.

The incident underscores the continuing economic importance of the Hilsa trade to the coastal communities of Patuakhali, where a single successful cast of the net can result in a significant windfall for local fishermen.
