On a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon in Minto, Sydney, the local Bangladeshi diaspora found themselves transported back to their roots. On 11 January, away from the relentless pace of expatriate professional life, a packed auditorium became the stage for a significant cultural milestone: the premiere of ‘Magic Word’, a drama directed by the acclaimed actor and filmmaker Majnun Mizan.
Written by Rahasya Raihan, the telefilm explores the delicate intricacies of human relationships and the emotional conflicts often found within the mechanical nature of life abroad. As the opening frames flickered across the screen, a pin-drop silence descended upon the hall. The narrative, which balances poignant realism with moments of subtle humour, resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom were seen visibly moved by the story’s resonance with their own lives.
The production boasts high technical standards, featuring cinematography by Shimul Shikdar and seamless editing by Ramzan Ali. The cast is a blend of seasoned Bangladeshi legends and emerging local talent from the Australian-Bangladeshi community.
| Cast Member | Role / Background |
|---|---|
| Dipa Khandakar | Veteran Bangladeshi Lead |
| Masum Basar | Senior Actor |
| Shilpi Sarkar Apu | Accomplished Supporting Artist |
| Majnun Mizan | Director & Key Performer |
| Rupanti Akid | Australian-Bangladeshi Talent |

| Hosain Delwar | Local Community Artist |
Speaking at the event, an emotional Majnun Mizan shared the arduous journey of bringing this project to life. Approximately 95% of the drama was filmed on location in Sydney. Despite the breathtaking scenery, Mizan noted that working within a restricted budget in a high-cost environment like Australia presented significant logistical hurdles.
“I find a unique joy in the director’s chair that often surpasses acting,” Mizan remarked. He further emphasised that with greater financial backing and facilities, the stunning locations of Sydney could serve as a backdrop for Bangladeshi productions that meet international cinematic standards.
The event was supported by Talat Mahmud of Oz Dream Built, a prominent Sydney-based real estate firm. Mahmud expressed his pride in sponsoring the initiative, stating that such aesthetic endeavours are vital for strengthening the bond between the diaspora and their linguistic heritage.
For those who missed the Sydney screening, the wait is short. ‘Magic Word’ is scheduled for its television debut today, Wednesday, 14 January, at 3:00 PM on Channel i. The broadcast is expected to draw a massive viewership, bridging the gap between the expatriate experience in Australia and audiences back home in Bangladesh.
