Bus Crashes Kill Three, Sparking Protests

In Lalmon, Bhola District, the tragic deaths of three people, including a mother and her son, have sparked outrage among local residents, just three days after a separate bus accident at the same location claimed the lives of two relatives. The incidents have intensified public demands for safer roads and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

On Tuesday (27 January), at around noon, students and local residents staged a prolonged protest on the Bhola-Charfassion Regional Highway near Gojaria Bazar. The demonstration lasted several hours, during which traffic was brought to a standstill, leaving nearly a hundred vehicles stranded and causing significant inconvenience to passengers and pedestrians alike. The protesters were advocating for stricter road safety measures and accountability for reckless bus drivers.

Representatives of the local Bus Owners’ Association later met with the demonstrators to discuss the situation. Following the discussions, the protesters temporarily lifted the blockade after being assured that necessary measures would be taken by Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

According to local sources, the first of these tragic incidents occurred on Thursday (22 January) in the evening, near Gojaria Bazar adjacent to Dr Azhar Uddin Degree College. A passenger bus ran over two motorcyclists, Abul Kalam and Md Oli Ullah Dubai, killing them instantly. Both were relatives, described as brother-in-law and sister-in-law. The accident provoked the local community, who set fire to the bus in protest.

Barely a day later, on Monday (26 January) afternoon, another bus accident at the same location claimed three more lives. The victims were auto-rickshaw driver Md Nasim (43), passenger Shilpi Rani Das (55), and her son Tushar Das (25), residents of Shashiganj, Ward 5, Chandpur Union, Tazumuddin Upazila, Bhola District.

The repeated accidents have heightened local anger, prompting calls for stricter oversight of bus operations. Protesters argue that reckless driving and lax enforcement by authorities are the primary reasons behind these recurrent tragedies. They are demanding safe roads and legal action against negligent drivers.

Lalmon Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Oliul Islam, told local media that separate legal cases have been filed by the victims’ families in both accidents. The cases list unidentified bus drivers and their accomplices as defendants. Authorities are actively working to identify the drivers to bring them to justice.
