Symbolic Book Fair to Commemorate 1st February Tradition

The cherished tradition of the Amar Ekushe Book Fair—the soul of Bangladesh’s literary and cultural identity—will find a symbolic voice this year. On Thursday, the “Ekushe Book Fair Sangram Parishad” (Action Council) announced they would host a symbolic book fair within the Bangla Academy premises on 1 February, asserting that the spirit of the language movement must not be silenced by administrative delays.

A Stand Against Tradition Broken

During a press conference held at the Poet Al Mahmud Writer’s Corner, the council expressed deep resentment over the government’s decision to postpone the official month-long fair. Usually commencing on the first day of February to honour the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, the official event has been moved to run from 20 February to 15 March.

The Sangram Parishad argued that this shift breaks a decades-old tradition that serves as the nation’s largest creative cultural festival. Joint Convenor Mofizur Rahman stated that the decision has “outraged and frustrated” writers, publishers, and cultural activists alike. He emphasised that while the government cited election-related security as a concern, the fair could have simply been paused for three days during the polls rather than being rescheduled entirely.

Event Highlights and Stakeholder Involvement

The symbolic fair is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM on 1 February. It will be inaugurated by the distinguished academic, Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury. Despite the protest nature of the event, organisers clarified that they are not in opposition to the Bangla Academy; rather, they are working with the Academy’s consent to ensure the continuity of the heritage.

Cultural Resistance and Governance

The council criticised the Ministry of Cultural Affairs for making unilateral decisions without consulting primary stakeholders. They noted that an interim government born from a mass uprising is expected to be more attuned to the democratic and cultural aspirations of the people.

To bridge the gap until the official fair begins on 20 February, the symbolic event will feature a vibrant stage for cultural performances. This includes discussions on the “Ekushe spirit,” traditional music, and theatrical displays. Organisers expect a massive turnout of “language lovers” and cultural enthusiasts who refuse to let the first day of February pass without the smell of new books and the hum of literary discourse.

Prominent figures in attendance at the briefing included publisher Sayeed Bari, Udichi General Secretary Jamshed Anwar, and former BAPUS President Alamgir Shikder. They reaffirmed that all publishers participating in the symbolic event would also join the main government-sanctioned fair later in the month.
