Pakistan to Play World Cup but Boycott India Match

In a stunning escalation of cricketing and geopolitical tensions, the Government of Pakistan has officially announced that while its national team will participate in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, they will strictly boycott their scheduled fixture against arch-rivals India. The announcement was made late last night via the government’s official social media channels, sending shockwaves through the global sporting community.

A Decision Rooted in Solidarity

The roots of this unprecedented move lie in the recent disqualification of Bangladesh from the tournament. The controversy began when the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested a change of venue from India, citing security concerns after Mustafizur Rahman was unceremoniously dropped from his IPL franchise at the alleged behest of the BCCI. When the ICC rejected the request and subsequently replaced Bangladesh with Scotland, Pakistan emerged as the sole voice of protest.

Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB Chairman and Interior Minister, had previously labelled the exclusion of Bangladesh as a “grave injustice.” Following a high-level briefing with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government concluded that a complete withdrawal was unnecessary, but a stand against India was mandatory.

Tournament Logistics and Group Standings

Pakistan has been drawn in Group A, alongside the Netherlands, the United States, Namibia, and India. While the tournament is co-hosted by Sri Lanka, all of Pakistan’s matches are slated to take place on Sri Lankan soil. By refusing to take the field on 15 February, Pakistan will effectively forfeit the match, handing India two points and a significant advantage in the group.

Date Opponent Venue Status
7 February Netherlands Sri Lanka Confirmed
10 February USA Sri Lanka Confirmed
15 February India Sri Lanka Boycotted
18 February Namibia Sri Lanka Confirmed

The Impact of Forfeiture

Under ICC Playing Condition Clause 16.10.7, a team that boycotts a match is deemed to have conceded. While India will gain the points, Pakistan’s Net Run Rate (NRR) will suffer a devastating blow. For the purposes of NRR calculation, the forfeiting team is treated as having played the full 20 overs without scoring a single run, which could jeopardise their chances of progressing to the Super 8 stage.

Since 2012, the ICC has deliberately placed India and Pakistan in the same group to maximise broadcasting revenue. This boycott threatens to make 2026 the first ICC event since 2010 to conclude without the “Greatest Rivalry” taking place. As of this morning, neither the BCCI nor the ICC has issued a formal response to Pakistan’s dramatic declaration.
