Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has reported the arrest of Mohammad Sarwar Alam, an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban, in connection with the hacking of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The announcement was made during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road, Dhaka, by Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of the DB.
According to Commissioner Islam, a General Diary (GD) was lodged at Hatirjheel Police Station by Jamaat-e-Islami following the hacking incident of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s X account. The DB Cyber Unit was entrusted with the investigation. In the course of the probe, Sarwar Alam was brought to the DB headquarters from Motijheel for questioning. A formal case has already been registered at Hatirjheel Police Station, and Alam has been taken into custody by the authorities there.

The Additional Commissioner emphasised that electronic devices used by the suspect—including his mobile phone and computer hard drives—have been seized. “For a transparent and impartial investigation, forensic examination of the confiscated items is essential,” he noted. He assured that the DB is conducting the investigation with full professionalism.
Commissioner Islam also urged the public not to spread misinformation on social media and to allow the police to conduct a fair investigation without obstruction.
When questioned about whether the Bangabhaban official was directly involved in the hacking, the DB chief clarified that no conclusions can be drawn until the forensic report is completed. “Every necessary step will be taken to ensure a thorough investigation,” he added.
The arrest follows a series of developments over the past week. On Saturday night, a screenshot of a controversial post from the X account of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Amir—containing objectionable remarks about working women—was circulated widely on social media. The post was subsequently removed from the account. Jamaat-e-Islami later issued a statement claiming that the post had been published due to a cyber attack, stressing that false statements were spread in the Amir’s name.
The DB’s swift action underscores the authorities’ commitment to investigating cybercrime cases linked to high-profile figures and ensuring accountability.
