Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned his side that they remain in a precarious position despite a breathtaking comeback victory at Anfield. The Catalan tactician claimed that while City are now “breathing down the necks” of Premier League leaders Arsenal, a mere incremental improvement will not suffice if they are to successfully defend their crown.
The stakes could not have been higher on Merseyside. For much of the second half, City appeared destined for a defeat that would have left them trailing Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal by a daunting nine points. Dominik Szoboszlai’s exquisite 74th-minute free-kick seemed to have sealed City’s fate, but the visitors staged a late surge.
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland turned the match on its head, securing a 2-1 win. Crucially, this marked City’s first victory at a capacity Anfield crowd since 2003, reducing the deficit at the top of the table to six points. Silva was blunt in his assessment of the result’s significance: “The title race is over if we lost this game.”
While Guardiola shared his midfielder’s relief, he tempered the celebrations with a sober analysis of the road ahead. Arsenal’s relentless form suggests they are unlikely to drop points easily, meaning City must find another gear.
“I have a feeling that improving a little bit will not be enough to compete against Arsenal,” Guardiola remarked. “Nine points would have been difficult; you don’t expect them to lose more than three games. But with 13 games left, there is still a long way to go.”
Guardiola highlighted the “survival instinct” of teams in relegation battles as a potential banana skin for the leaders, noting that City’s involvement in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League adds a layer of physical and mental fatigue that Arsenal might not yet face.

The match was not without its share of friction. In the dying moments, Rayan Cherki appeared to have added a third for City with a spectacular effort from the halfway line into an empty net. However, the goal was chalked off as the referee had already whistled for a foul on Haaland by Szoboszlai. The Liverpool midfielder was sent off for the shirt-pull, a decision Guardiola met with characteristic sarcasm, suggesting the referee should have let the goal stand so Szoboszlai wouldn’t miss Liverpool’s next fixture.
Conversely, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot expressed immense frustration over an earlier incident involving Marc Guéhi. Slot argued that Guéhi should have seen red for a professional foul on Mohamed Salah while the game was still goalless. “If you follow the rulebook,” Slot lamented, “it is a clear shirt-pull on Mo Salah, who scores that 100 times out of 100. That is where my frustration lies.”
With the gap narrowed, the focus now shifts to the inevitable showdown at the Etihad Stadium, which many believe will be the ultimate decider in this captivating title race.
