A wave of shock has rippled through the Charghat Upazila of Rajshahi following a gruesome assault on a local political organiser. On Wednesday, 11 February 2026, Biraj Ali, the General Secretary of the Nimpara Union Krishak Dal, was targeted in a calculated attack that has left him with life-altering injuries.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:00 pm near the Ramchandrapur graveyard. Mr Ali (47), the son of the late Amir Mollah and a resident of Ramchandrapur village, was returning home from the fields after gathering fodder for his cattle.
Witnesses and family members recount a chillingly professional hit. As Mr Ali transitioned from the fields onto the Kaluhati-Arani road, a motorcyclist intercepted him. The assailant, whose identity was concealed by a helmet and whose vehicle’s number plate was strategically masked with cloth, launched an immediate and violent assault using a machete (locally known as a chapatti).
The attacker specifically targeted the victim’s limbs, intentionally severing the tendons in his hands and legs—a tactic known locally as “rall-kata,” designed to permanently cripple the target. After inflicting multiple lacerations, the assailant fled the scene before bystanders could intervene.

The screams of the victim alerted nearby residents, who rushed to his aid. Mr Ali was initially transported to the Puthia Upazila Health Complex. However, due to the critical nature of his injuries and the precision required for reconstructive surgery on his tendons, he was subsequently transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he remains under close medical supervision.
The victim’s elder brother, Abdul Majid, maintained that Biraj had no known personal enmities or long-standing disputes with neighbours or political rivals. He further noted that there were no recent tensions regarding upcoming local voting centres.
However, Shahinur রহমান Shahin, Joint General Secretary of the Charghat Upazila BNP, suggested that the attacker was likely a local resident. “The ease with which the assailant navigated the escape routes suggests an intimate familiarity with the village layout,” he remarked. While Mr Ali was known as an active campaigner for the candidate Abu Sayeed Chand, officials are still investigating whether the motive was purely political or a personal vendetta.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Charghat Model Thana, Helal Uddin Faruqi, confirmed that police units have inspected the site and are currently gathering evidence. “Legal action will be taken following a thorough investigation,” he stated, adding that the regional situation remains stable despite the brutality of the event.
