Independent Candidate Withdraws From Narayanganj-3 Polls

In a dramatic turn of events in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, independent candidate and former State Minister, Professor Md. Rezaul Karim, has announced his withdrawal from the race in the Narayanganj-3 constituency, which encompasses Sonargaon and Siddhirganj.

The announcement was made on Thursday, 12 February, at 3:20 pm, following an extensive visit by Professor Karim to multiple polling centres in the Meghna Industrial Area of Sonargaon. Speaking to reporters, he cited widespread electoral irregularities, including the forcible removal of his agents and instances of fraudulent voting, as the primary reasons for his decision.

“I have witnessed my election agents being ejected from multiple polling stations, and at several centres, there is evidence of rigged ballots being cast,” Professor Karim said. “Under these circumstances, it is impossible to ensure a free and fair election. The administration’s inaction has prevented the true voice of the voters from being reflected.”

Professor Karim specifically alleged that supporters of the BNP candidate, Azharul Islam Mannan, were involved in orchestrating these irregularities. He urged the authorities to immediately annul the election in the constituency and called for a fresh, transparent, and impartial poll.

The situation highlights growing concerns over electoral management and voter confidence, especially in highly contested constituencies such as Narayanganj-3. Professor Karim’s withdrawal marks the latest in a series of complaints and election boycotts that have emerged nationwide during the ongoing voting process.
