In a tragic incident on Monday, 16 February, the body of a former student of Jagannath University (JNU) was discovered hanging in a hostel in Dhupkhola, Old Dhaka. The recovery took place around 10:45–11:00 a.m. on the sixth floor of the building where he had been residing.
The deceased has been identified as Imran Nabil Pramanik, a student of the Department of Islamic Studies from the 2016–17 academic session. His family home is located in Sundarganj, Gaibandha district. According to the university proctor, Professor Muhammad Tajammul Haque, upon hearing the news, officials immediately proceeded to the local police station. He added that Imran had been sharing the hostel with two other roommates, both of whom were away at home for the elections, leaving him alone at the time of the incident.
Gendaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Golam Mortuja, confirmed the incident, stating: “Based on information from his roommates, we found the body hanging from a ceiling fan with a towel tied around it. The door had been locked from the inside. Initial findings suggest it may have been a case of suicide. Conversations with the family revealed that Imran had been suffering from mental distress.”
The body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination, following which it will be handed over to the family. Authorities emphasised that the exact cause of death will be determined after a detailed medical investigation.
