Kafil and Saiful to Lead Road Transport Owners

The Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association has successfully concluded its biennial elections for the 2026–2028 term, ushering in a new leadership mandate. In a high-stakes electoral process held on Monday, Kafil Uddin Ahmed was elected President, while Md. Saiful Alam secured the influential position of Secretary General. Saidur Rahman rounded out the top executive tier as the newly elected Treasurer.

The council session and voting took place at the Ladies Club on Eskaton Garden Road in the capital, serving as a critical juncture for an industry grappling with operational challenges and regulatory reforms.

A Landslide Mandate for Change

The election determined the leadership of a comprehensive 121-member committee. While the majority of the committee members were elected unopposed—reflecting a degree of consensus within the association—the top three executive posts (President, Secretary General, and Treasurer) were fiercely contested.

Voting commenced at 8:00 am and concluded at 3:00 pm, with a significant turnout from transport owners across the country. The proceedings were overseen by Advocate Mamunur Rashid Rony, who served as the Chief Election Commissioner. To ensure transparency and adherence to corporate governance standards, senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, including the Director General and Assistant Director General, were present as observers throughout the day.

The official results were announced at approximately 4:00 pm, sparking celebrations and the traditional distribution of sweets among supporters. Following the declaration, the newly minted Secretary General, Md. Saiful Alam, expressed his gratitude to the electorate and outlined his vision for the future.

“Today’s election was conducted in an exceptionally fair and festive atmosphere,” Alam remarked. “The transport owners have exercised their right to choose leaders they trust. Our primary objective now is to work collectively to restore order and discipline within the transport sector, which remains the backbone of our national economy.”

The new committee takes office at a time when the industry faces mounting pressure to modernize fleets and improve safety standards. The Association is expected to act as the primary liaison between private owners and the government’s transport regulatory bodies over the next two bienniums.
