Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stern warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin has effectively initiated a third world war, urging the international community to act decisively to restore global peace. Speaking in a recent interview at the presidential office in Kyiv, Zelensky rejected Russia’s proposed ceasefire conditions, describing them as unacceptable and dangerous.
BBC correspondents conducted the interview over the weekend. Zelensky criticised Moscow’s insistence that Ukraine withdraw from key strategic regions—an order that has already cost over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers in failed attempts to defend these areas. He emphasised that Russia seeks to impose its own way of life globally and strip Ukrainian citizens of the right to determine their own future. “We will not surrender,” Zelensky stated firmly. “Only with substantial military and economic pressure can Putin be halted.”
Currently, Russia controls approximately 20% of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, along with portions of the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Zelensky referred to these areas as “fortress cities” and warned that ceding them would weaken Ukraine’s position, leaving millions vulnerable to Russian control and deeply dividing society.
The following table summarises Russia’s territorial holdings in Ukraine:
| Region | Total Area (sq km) | Russian Control (%) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donetsk | 26,517 | 20% | Known as a “fortress city” |
| Kherson | 28,457 | ~30% | Key southern territory |
| Zaporizhzhia | 27,183 | ~25% | Strategically significant region |
Addressing the potential consequences of a temporary ceasefire, Zelensky warned that any short-term concessions would be harmful in the long run. “If Putin is satisfied for a moment, it could be detrimental for us over time. Once a pause ends, he may launch a new offensive,” he said. Analysts echo his concern, noting that Putin’s broader campaign could resume within one to two years, even though long-term plans might span three to five years.
Zelensky’s message was clear: Ukraine aims to emerge victorious, and he called on all nations to unite in safeguarding peace and countering Russian aggression. The interview highlighted that accepting Russia’s ceasefire terms would not only provide temporary calm but could also entrench long-term risks. Zelensky expressed confidence that international solidarity, coupled with determined resistance, would enable Ukraine to navigate the ongoing crisis successfully.
