Dhaka, 1 March: National Insurance Day, once marked by elaborate state-sponsored ceremonies and nationwide outreach campaigns, has passed this year without any formal observance. Since 2020, the day has been celebrated annually on 1 March with considerable prominence, aimed at strengthening the insurance industry and raising public awareness about risk protection and financial security. However, in a notable departure from previous years, neither government bodies nor private insurers arranged commemorative programmes in 2026.
The day was introduced to promote the development of Bangladesh’s insurance sector and to foster a culture of risk management among citizens. Traditionally, observances extended from the capital to divisional, district, and উপজেলা levels, featuring rallies, seminars, policy dialogues, and public awareness drives. The principal national event was typically held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship International Conference Centre in Dhaka, often attended by the Prime Minister or a senior cabinet member who would formally inaugurate the nationwide programme.
In past years, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA), alongside state-owned and private insurers, coordinated thematic campaigns highlighting the importance of life and general insurance. Branch offices across the country were decorated with banners and festoons, and discussion forums were organised to engage policyholders, industry stakeholders, and the public.
This year, however, the regulator refrained from initiating any activities. Saifunnahar Sumi, Adviser (Media and Communications) and spokesperson for IDRA, stated that no directives had been issued by the Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Ministry of Finance. In the absence of official guidance, no programmes were undertaken at either the central or local levels.
National Insurance Day’s administrative journey reflects its growing institutional recognition. Initially categorised as a ‘B’ class national day, calls emerged in 2021 to elevate it to ‘A’ class status. IDRA formally applied for reclassification on 2 January 2022. On 27 September 2022, the Cabinet Division resolved to upgrade the day from ‘B’ to ‘A’ class, and the proposal received cabinet approval on 10 October the same year. A circular issued on 13 October 2023 directed all ministries, divisions, and agencies to observe the day accordingly, replacing the earlier 15 January 2020 circular.
A summary of key milestones is provided below:
| Date | Decision | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| 15 January 2020 | Recognised as ‘B’ class day | Formal state observance begins |
| 1 March 2021 | Demand for ‘A’ class status | Industry-led advocacy |
| 2 January 2022 | IDRA applies for upgrade | Regulatory initiative |
| 27 September 2022 | Cabinet Division decision | Approved upgrade in principle |
| 10 October 2022 | Cabinet endorsement | ‘A’ class status confirmed |
| 13 October 2023 | Circular issued | Nationwide compliance instructed |
Bangladesh’s insurance sector comprises more than 80 life and non-life insurers, yet its contribution to GDP remains comparatively modest. Industry experts argue that sustained awareness initiatives are essential to improving insurance penetration and strengthening consumer confidence.
The absence of observance this year has raised concerns among stakeholders, who view National Insurance Day not merely as a ceremonial occasion but as a strategic platform for policy engagement and public education. Whether the lapse represents an administrative oversight or a shift in priorities remains unclear, but many within the sector hope that future commemorations will resume with renewed vigour and clear institutional coordination.
