Inspector Shot During Capital Operation

A senior officer of the Department of Narcotics Control was injured by gunfire during a targeted anti-drug operation in the busy transport hub of Sayedabad on Monday, underscoring the continuing risks faced by law enforcement personnel in the capital.

Inspector Md. Siddiqur Rahman, 38, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg while attempting to apprehend suspected traffickers near the railway tracks adjacent to the Sayedabad Bus Terminal at approximately 12 noon on 2 March. He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 12:55 pm and later admitted to Ward Four. Medical officials confirmed that the bullet struck below the knee and did not cause life-threatening injuries. His condition is reported to be stable.

According to departmental sources, a five-day special drive has been under way across the capital from 1 to 5 March. Seven separate teams were deployed to key locations identified as high-risk zones for narcotics trafficking. Acting on confidential intelligence, the Sayedabad team identified three suspected dealers operating in the vicinity of the railway corridor.

When officers moved in to detain one of the suspects, the individuals allegedly produced a firearm and discharged four rounds towards the officers. Amid the sudden exchange, Inspector Rahman was hit. Witnesses in the area reported hearing several gunshots, causing panic among commuters and traders. Law enforcement personnel swiftly secured the scene, preventing further escalation.

The suspects managed to flee, and a reinforced manhunt is now under way. Officials believe that the Sayedabad transport corridor has long been exploited as an active route for the distribution and transit of illicit substances, owing to its proximity to major bus services and railway connections. Surveillance and patrols in the area have recently been intensified as part of broader counter-narcotics efforts.
