“I Have a Plan”—Bangladesh Prepares for North Korea

Despite a 2-0 defeat against nine-time champions China in their opening match of the Women’s Asian Cup, the Bangladesh women’s football team captured hearts with their spirited performance. Yet, British head coach Peter Butler was quick to deflect praise, emphasising that his team earned their place in the tournament through merit, not luck.

Speaking at a press conference at Sydney Western Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s clash with three-time Asian Cup winners North Korea, Butler made it clear that Bangladesh will not be intimidated. The session also addressed a controversial remark by Mahfuza Akhter Kiran, head of the women’s wing at BAFUF, regarding China. Butler did not mince words in addressing all matters directly.

Acknowledging North Korea as one of the tournament favourites, Butler said, “We are facing a technically brilliant and highly talented team. Looking at their FIFA ranking—9th in Asia, second only to Japan—you can see why they are among the top contenders for this competition.”

He hinted at potential changes to the starting XI but stressed that despite facing consecutive strong opponents—China and North Korea—he will stick to his philosophy. On North Korea’s attacking full-backs, Butler stated confidently: “How to stop them? That’s a good question. Listen, we have a game plan, and I believe it will be effective. I have a plan. At the end of the day, we won’t just sit back and watch. If we concede a goal, it happens. But our objective is to play proactively, not just defensively.”

After the China match, fans were already dreaming of a quarter-final spot, but Butler tempered expectations. “No, I don’t think about the quarter-finals. We didn’t come here to imagine World Cup qualification. My focus is on improvement and learning for each match. I want the players to give their best on the field with honesty and dedication,” he explained.

Addressing Mahfuza Akhter Kiran’s remarks about China, Butler dismissed them as “completely misguided.” He added, “It was inappropriate for a BAFUF official to publicly criticise a strong team. These players compete in PSG and the Chinese Super League—not at a local level. Such comments are disrespectful and somewhat irresponsible.”

Captain Afeeda Khandakar, seated alongside Butler, acknowledged North Korea’s strength: “They are a very good and strong team. The coach will guide us to avoid the mistakes from our previous match. Insha Allah, we will perform well.” On the coach’s plan, she added, “The coach’s plan is our plan. We will execute it as instructed and focus on playing our best. The result will speak for itself.”
