Nearly 200 Children Killed in Middle East Strikes

The recent US and Israeli military operations in the Middle East have resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 children, prompting international concern over the humanitarian toll of escalating regional violence. The offensive, which began on Saturday, 28 February, has affected several countries, with Iran experiencing the heaviest casualties.

Child Casualties Across the Region

According to a statement by UNICEF, the widespread attacks have led to a shocking number of child fatalities. The agency confirmed that 181 children were killed in Iran alone, while seven children died in Lebanon, three in Israel, and one in Kuwait. UNICEF emphasised that children are innocent victims of conflict, bearing the brunt of violence that they neither instigate nor influence.

Particularly devastating reports have emerged from Minab, a city in southern Iran. Local authorities, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that at least 175 schoolgirls were killed in a strike targeting a girls’ school on the first day of the offensive. The attack has been described as a humanitarian catastrophe, underscoring the vulnerability of children in conflict zones.

UNICEF Statement

UNICEF’s statement highlighted the tragic impact on young lives:

“Children never start wars, yet they pay the highest price. The current military escalation across the Middle East is having a devastating and unacceptable effect on the lives of children.”

The agency called for immediate measures to protect civilians, particularly children, from the effects of ongoing hostilities and urged all parties involved to adhere strictly to international humanitarian law.

Regional Impact

The strikes have intensified concerns about the long-term psychological and social effects on children in affected areas, including loss of family members, destruction of schools, and disruption of essential services. Humanitarian groups warn that without urgent intervention, these children may face prolonged trauma, malnutrition, and a severe setback to education.

Child Fatalities Overview

Country Child Deaths Notable Incident
Iran 181 Minab girls’ school attack; 175 schoolgirls killed
Lebanon 7 Civilian areas affected
Israel 3 Residential areas hit
Kuwait 1 Collateral casualty
Total 192

Humanitarian Call

International observers, including UNICEF and other child protection agencies, have stressed the urgent need for ceasefires and humanitarian corridors. The attacks demonstrate the severe toll of conflict on the most vulnerable populations and have drawn global condemnation.

The humanitarian community continues to monitor the situation closely, urging the international community to prevent further child casualties and to provide urgent aid, psychological support, and safe spaces for affected children.
