Valverde Single-Handedly Crushed City With a Hat-Trick

Real Madrid produced a commanding display at the Santiago Bernabéu as Federico Valverde delivered the performance of his career, scoring a remarkable first senior hat-trick to secure a 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

The Uruguayan midfielder, widely recognised for his relentless energy and versatility, transformed into a clinical finisher on the night, leaving the visiting side struggling to cope with his precision and movement. Despite arriving at the match with several key players unavailable through injury, including Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid delivered a performance full of confidence and attacking flair.

Manchester City actually enjoyed greater control of possession throughout the match, keeping the ball for nearly 58 per cent of the contest. However, Real Madrid were far more effective in front of goal, converting their opportunities with ruthless efficiency.

Real Madrid took the lead in the 20th minute through Valverde after a moment of confusion involving City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Madrid midfielder drove into the penalty area and attempted to round the goalkeeper. Donnarumma rushed forward but lost his balance and fell awkwardly, allowing Valverde to calmly push the ball into an unguarded net.

Just seven minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage. Vinícius Júnior initiated the attack before the ball deflected kindly off Rúben Dias into Valverde’s path. The midfielder burst into the box and finished with a composed angled strike that left Donnarumma helpless.

Valverde completed his hat-trick three minutes before the interval. A lofted delivery from Brahim Díaz floated into the penalty area, where Valverde evaded a defender and struck a controlled volley into the corner. The goal sealed a memorable night for the midfielder, marking his first hat-trick in over a decade of senior professional football. Remarkably, he had previously scored only three goals in 75 Champions League appearances before this match.

Real Madrid continued to attack after the break. Brahim Díaz forced a strong save from Donnarumma with a powerful effort, while Vinícius Júnior had a chance to extend the lead when he won a penalty following a foul by the Italian goalkeeper. However, the Brazilian’s weak spot kick was comfortably saved.

Manchester City attempted to respond, with Erling Haaland nearly scoring in the 67th minute, only for Antonio Rüdiger to produce a crucial sliding block in front of goal. Later, Nico O’Reilly also threatened after a defensive lapse, but Thibaut Courtois reacted swiftly to deny him with his foot.

Despite late pressure from Haaland and Bernardo Silva, City were unable to find a breakthrough. Real Madrid therefore carry a commanding three-goal advantage into the second leg, which will be played next Tuesday in Manchester.
