Barcelona Demolish Newcastle to Reach Quarters

Barcelona delivered a commanding performance to defeat Newcastle United 7–2 at Camp Nou, securing a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with an emphatic 8–3 aggregate victory. Despite a competitive first half, the Spanish side’s attacking brilliance after the break proved far too much for their English opponents.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with both teams showing attacking ambition. Barcelona opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Raphinha, who finished neatly after an intricate exchange involving Lamine Yamal and Fermín López. Newcastle responded swiftly, as Anthony Elanga capitalised on a defensive lapse to equalise.

Barcelona regained the lead shortly afterwards when Marc Bernal converted from close range following a well-delivered set-piece. However, defensive frailties continued to trouble the hosts, allowing Elanga to score his second goal of the match in the 28th minute, once again bringing Newcastle level.

As the first half approached its conclusion, Barcelona found a decisive moment. A foul on Raphinha inside the penalty area earned the hosts a spot-kick, which was confidently converted by Yamal. That goal ensured Barcelona entered the interval with a slender 3–2 advantage.

The second half, however, was entirely dominated by the home side. Barcelona increased the tempo and pinned Newcastle deep inside their own half. Their persistence paid off in the 51st minute, when Fermín López calmly slotted home after a precise through ball.

Robert Lewandowski then took control of proceedings, scoring twice in quick succession. He first found the net with a well-placed header from a corner before adding a second with a composed finish from inside the penalty area. The brace took his Champions League tally to 109 goals, reinforcing his position among the competition’s all-time great scorers.

Barcelona’s attacking momentum showed no signs of slowing. Newcastle’s defence, under constant pressure, struggled to cope with the fluid movement and incisive passing of the hosts. Raphinha added the seventh goal in the 72nd minute, capitalising on a defensive error to complete his brace and underline his growing influence this season.
